We’re having a Live Stream!!

The stream is scheduled for September 16th, 2016 at 9:00pm (eastern time USA / GMT -5) and is expected to last 2 hours. The game of choice for this stream, is Kerbal Space Program, where we are on a mission to complete A CHALLENGE! The video is embedded above, and you are free to watch it here if you want. If you want to engage in the comments section for the stream however, please click the visit the video on YouTube directly.

This weeks challenge for the stream is as follows: Build and Pilot an SSTO (Single Stage To Orbit) craft to Duna

However, these are the success conditions:
  1. The plane must transport 15 kerbals
  2. The plane must NOT dock or otherwise connect to any other vessels for fuel transfer (no refueling)
  3. The plane MUST LAND on the Surface of Duna
  4. The plane must haul a ROVER to the surface with it
  5. Kerbal will plant a flag on Duna, and Rover will take science experiment from the surface to prove victorious
  6. FAR (Ferram Aerospace Research mod) must be installed and operating with default settings the entire time.
  7. We’ll be using as many stock parts as possible during this build, but this is not a requirement. Mod parts allowed this time.

BONUS CHALLENGE: Return the plane and the Kerbals back home safely. Super Amazing points for landing on the landing strip when doing so.

YOU CAN JOIN IN ON THIS CHALLENGE AS WELL! Here’s what you can do!

Build a plane for a mission that matches the above criteria, and test out your skill in accomplishing this goal yourself! Then, when you think you’ve nailed it, SEND IN YOUR CRAFT FILE to the HotTips gmail address. The details of this entire contest details, including submission instructions, are in the video below. For security reasons, the email address to submit crafts to is not typed here in text. You will need to watch the video below to learn the address to submit to, OR, open the video up on YouTube, and read in the description of that video.

Prize Available?

There is a PRIZE for the person I think had the best looking plane (which still needs to work… I will test the one I pick as the winning craft during the live stream, and it must appear as though it can work, otherwise I choose another plane). The prize is a $10 steam gift card.

IF I NEED TO HAVE A CERTAIN MOD INSTALLED TO LOAD YOUR CRAFT, PLEASE TELL ME THE MODS REQUIRED WHEN YOU SUBMIT! I WILL NOT HAVE MY FULL MODLIST INSTALLED DURING THE STREAM!

  • Hey,
I have a few questions for the challenge:

    1. Is kOS-usage allowed? kOS is a mod that adds board computers which can be programmed… So I have written a program that takes my SSTO into orbit on itself. Taking piloting out of the equation because I am too lazy to fly myself…
Duna landing, takeoff and KSC return-landing are not programmed (yet) though
(plus I am not sure if a programmed KSC return-landing is actually doable at all…)

    2. If kOS is not allowed, which mod do you use for larger parachutes? Aerodynamics on the stock ones is becoming an issue since the craft has a large amount of it… I can land on Duna without breaking anything but touchdown speed (vertical) is around 13 m/s which makes for a very bumpy landing…

3: If kOS is allowed must it be possible to fly to orbit manually?

    4. Would you read the craft-description this time? :p

    cheers

    #NailedBonusChallenge 😀

    P.S.S.
Sorry about the crappy submission last time :/ As said I had no way to test it and therefore that was all I could do 🙁

    • Hey there! I’ve made edits to your comment to reflect the other comments, and then just did away with the other comments. So… for your questions:

      1) Yes, it’s allowed. I won’t be testing it to Duna… only to orbit. If the dV numbers in Kerbal Engineer lead me to believe it can reach and land on Duna with ease (about 1,500 dV remaining give or take) once orbit is reached, it’s believed that it has the fuel to do it, considering also your parachutes.

      2) I believe the parachutes are added in with Ven’s Stock Revamp. I’d recommend also installing RealChutes just in case as well, as it gives you more fine-tuned control.

      3) Not if you’ve programmed it, and I can let it run and do it’s autopilot thing. If the KOS fails in the stream, I’ll try and fly it manually, in which case… umm.. yes, it has to work manually

      4) Please be brief. I have a lot to do. Focusing completely on what I need to do for your craft to work would be ideal.
